Surf City, Huntington Beach, California

Medical Marijuana Dispensary

written by,  gary ratchford

While visiting family last week in Los Angeles on 06-07-2015 I took the opportunity as mediabygary to speak with employees, and a few medical patients at a Huntington Beach California Medical Marijuana Dispensary.

Marijuana dispensaries in California are often referred to as "pot shops", and since about 2011 Los Angeles District Attorney's along with the federal govt. began serious crackdown on different accusations of violations of laws.

In 2009, then Attorney General, Eric Holder's comments were interpreted by many to mean the federal govt. would not prosecute medical marijuana in California.
What Holder actually said was, "It would not be a priority to prosecute patients with serious illnesses, or their caregivers who comply with state laws on medical marijuana, but he would not tolerate drug traffickers , who hide behind the pretense of compliance"

Fast forward to June 03, 2015 on Wednesday The House Of Representatives voted to reauthorize an amendment protecting medical marijuana business from the federal govt. interfering in states like California where the drug is legal.

Medical marijuana laws are in effect in 23 states, and vary in different cities, counties, and states so be careful to research, and obey the laws, and regulations.  When traveling it's wise to research laws before you begin.

An overwhelming majority of Americans agree that medical marijuana is an issue that is best left to states like California.

My visit at Surf City, Huntington Beach California on 06-07-2015 began, and ended with a friendly conversation, about the governing laws.  No Exceptions / No California Residency/ No California Medical I.D. Card / No Entrance .

I smiled .. because I knew that employees, and medical patients like this can make this work for everyone.

A Santa Ana marijuana dispensary security video
released by attorney Matthew Pappas shows police
entering Sky High Holistic May 26, 2015, and forcing patients to the ground.

Patrons inside are assumed medical
patients as a medical i.d. is required for entry.in California.

I recently returned from a trip to California just last week, and was denied entrance at another dispensary in Huntington Beach as a journalist .  No i.d.
No entrance.  No exceptions. Photos at a Huntington Beach Dispensary show me with a patient

In California medical marijuana is legal, and recreational marijuana is illegal.

The dispensary manager Marla Janes is an amputee who said she was victimized, and intimidated.

The video shows a male officer asking another female officer "Did you punch that one legged guerita"

The female officer replied, "I was about to kick her in the (expletive) nub ."

Santa Ana Police had been investigating the dispensary for supposedly operating illegally.

Pappas says he's not sure that the officers were eating marijuana edibles because he "can't see the labels,"  but points out an officers close examination of the wrapper, and other evidence that they were getting high on the job.

The Santa Ana Police Department sent a cease, & desist order on Feb 26 , but the dispensary remained open.

An Internal Affairs Investigation into the officers actions is underway, Santa Ana Police Chief Carlos
Roja said.

Rojas said it is likely the officers had been eating their own snacks, and that a drug test will be given.

The police officers are not on administrative leave .

Pappas, and his client plan to file a  lawsuit.
